Use Google Public DNS and/or OpenDNS to speed up internet access

In relation to my previous post on “How to change Sun Wireless Broadband DNS Settings”, you can choose any of the following DNS servers for fast and reliable DNS name resolution:

Google Public DNS:

DNS1: 8.8.8.8
DNS2: 8.8.4.4

OpenDNS:

DNS1: 208.67.222.222
DNS2: 208.67.220.220

How to change Sun Wireless Broadband DNS settings

For Sun Wireless Broadband subscribers, here are the steps needed for you to create a new Connection Profile and use your preferred DNS server/s.

1. Open the Sun Broadband Wireless application and make sure that it’s disconnected to the internet.

2. On the Sun Broadband Wireless application menu, click “Tools > Options”. The Sun Broadband Options box will appear. Click on “Profile Management” on the left-side menu.

3. On the Sun Broadband Options box, click the “New” button. A new profile form will appear.

4. Key in your desired Profile Name (Ex. “Sun – Custom DNS”); Select “Static” APN and key in “fbband” on the APN: field box.

5. Click on the “Advanced…” button. The Advanced Settings box will appear.

6. Un-select “CHAP” and select “PAP” on the Authentication Protocol Settings; change the DNS Settings to “Static” and key in your desired DNS server IP address/es (The OpenDNS servers IP addresses – 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 – were used in the example below). Click the “Save” button and click “OK”.

7. The new profile is saved and you can use this to connect to the internet using your specified DNS server/s.

In most cases, especially when using OpenDNS servers, you might notice a slight improvement in internet access speeds and connection stability as compared to using the default Sun Broadband DHCP-issued DNS settings.

How to stop sending email you’ll later regret – These 4 simple steps

Have you ever sent an email only to realize later on that you shouldn’t have sent it at all? These things usually happen when you’re sending mail at the heat of your emotions, or when you’re sleepy, or funnier but plausible still, when you’re drunk!

It kind of makes you wish you have a Microsoft Exchange server which gives you the ability to “recall” your mail, which is a reactive solution.

But if you want things done proactively, then here’s yet another reason to use Google mail or Gmail. They’ve added a new application tool in their arsenal, called Mail Goggles, that proactively tries to prevent you from making that email blunder.

When enabled, Mail Goggles will make you solve a couple of math problems after you click “send” to make sure that you’re sober or at least in the right state of mind.

But what if you’re “mathematically challenged” you say? The good news is you can set the difficulty level to suit you, the bad news is it won’t go any lower than 1. Well, tough luck, you might as well let another person do the mailing for you then. Kidding aside, this is one neat tool that can save you from humiliation.

Just follow these 4 simple steps to enable Mail Goggles in Gmail:

Click “Settings” in the upper right corner of the Gmail window.
Click on the “Labs” tab of the Settings page.
Scroll down the Labs section until you see the “Mail Goggles” feature and select “Enable”.
Scroll down to the bottom part of the Labs section and click on the “Save Changes” button.

By default, Mail Goggles is only active on weekends (Friday and Saturday) from 10PM to 4AM, since this is the time when you’ll most likely need it (after partying hard). Once enabled, you can adjust its settings by going to the Gmail General Settings tab.

Once everything’s done, you won’t have to worry about inadvertently sending that hate letter to your boss, or that private, steamy love letter to your entire address book.

Now if only they had text or sms goggles. :)

Browse the web the Google Chrome way

Google recently released the beta version of their new web browser named Google Chrome.

I installed it a few hours ago and found its features to be excellent, in terms of security, ease of use and performance! It looks like the Google guys have another hit in their hands!

The problem is now I can’t decide which browser to use, Firefox or Google Chrome. :)

The Makati City bomb blast at Glorietta 2

Today’s another very tragic day for the Philippines due to the Glorietta 2 bombing incident.

At about 1:30PM this afternoon, an explosive blast ripped through the ground floor of Glorietta 2, one of the country’s busiest and most heavily populated shopping malls, located at the heart of the Makati City central business and shopping district.

The Makati bombing claimed the lives of at least 9 people and injured hundreds more when its shock waves caused a violent chain reaction of collapsing building structures (ceilings, floors, walls and roof), menacing shards of projectile-like glass and metal shrapnels, falling debris and paranoia-induced human stampede.

The blast was initially thought of as an LPG tank that exploded inside Luk Yuen, one of the restaurants located at ground zero. Investigators soon ruled out the exploding LPG tank theory and found evidence that the cause was far more sinister than initially expected, it was a terrorist bomb attack using C-4 plastic explosives.

Most of the victims were rushed to different hospitals in the Makati area, such as the Makati Medical Center and the Ospital ng Makati.

For now, please pray for the eternal repose of those who died and for the quick recovery of the injured victims. May justice be served swiftly.

Wowowee Wilyonaryo: The senate probe

It appears that a resolution has already been passed in the Philippine Senate to formally investigate the alleged Wowowee Wilyonaryo “scam”.

Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas filed Resolution No. 111 last Monday, September 3rd. The resolution seeks an inquiry on the alleged game-fixing scam that occurred on the P2-million “Wilyonaryo” segment of the above-mentioned TV show.

Gatorade ad campaigns: Subliminal advertizing?

There’s this pretty interesting “conspiracy” theory topic posted at the Basketbawfull website on how certain companies make use of subliminal messages in their marketing campaigns. The site specifically singled out Gatorade.

Check out the graphical summary of the above-mentioned site and see if you their conspiracy theory makes sense. To sum everything up in 2 words: Sex Sells.

Wowowee Wilyonaryo: What was the design flaw?

This is in reaction to what ABS-CBN says as a “corrected game design flaw” on the “Wilyonaryo” game segment of the popular show, “Wowowee”.

But why should there be such a “design flaw” in the first place?

Let’s focus on the props used for the “Wilyonaryo” game segment. If a responsible person or game designer were to make a good design, then one of the top design criteria would be to ensure that the box would only accommodate a single number card at any given time.

So what exactly was the design flaw that was corrected?

1) Did they make provisions on the box for additional number slots? If so, why would they? Every box would have to be cleared of its contents and shuffled prior to every episode anyway, right?

2) Was it an operational design flaw on their pre-game preparations? Which is doubtful since it’s highly unlikely for a person to inadvertently put in more than two numbers inside each box, unless…

As a learning experience, it would be better for the Department of Trade and Industry to inspect and approve all props and game design operations for all Filipino TV shows, or any DTI sanctioned event for that matter, prior to giving out permits from now on. Or is this being done now?

And in the interest of truth and public welfare, perhaps the studio should have clearly explained what the design flaw was. This would have eliminated some of the questions that have been nagging a lot of people.
